Where do elephants dance?

Camberley Elephant

Yesterday’s dancing ladies were outside an office block on the A30, London Road. Here is possibly the more famous piece of sculpture as more people have seen it on that road – the pipework elephant. This piece is regularly decorated with graffiti but, at the moment, is wonderfully white and dramatic – I believe that we have local historian Ken Clarke to thank for this!

According to Mary Bennett (Camberley: A History) the firm of Trollope & Colls invited the artist and writer Barbara Jones to design a piece which could be used in the Lord Mayor’s Show in 1963. The next year they were allowed to put it outside their premises in Yorktown where it has stood ever since. More about the designer can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Jones_(artist)
