The once bustling Basingstoke Canal is now just a tranquil (and very photographic!) spot.   Completed in 1794, it was apparently never a commercial success and by the 1950s had become derelict.  After a great deal of patient work by enthusiasts it was re-opened in 1991.  More info, as ever, at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basingstoke_Canal
